No Memory of the Same
Images of defaced rood screens make up No Memory Of The Same, remnants from acts of iconoclasm during the English Reformation and the break with Rome, a familiar echo of severance from wider union. These are reworked in intense detail to reveal only the damage inflicted by the iconoclasts, their every act of erasure inverted to a gestural presence; iconographies of rejection shaped by the traces of a faith still preserved in their forms. Misplaced conservation efforts or well-humoured interventions have further altered the originals, turning these reconfigured portraits into a palimpsest of sacred and profane intentions, some of which are mine.
